About the Tribe

The Mursi are a Nilotic ethnic group in Ethiopia's South Omo Zone. They are known for their unique cultural practices. For example, Mursi men engage in light scarification after killing an adversary, while Mursi women undergo lip piercing to wear a lip plate, which increases their bride price. Both men and women paint their faces and bodies with white chalk before dances and rituals.

Stick battles are a tradition among young men, and the winner is chosen by girls who are looking for a potential male. Men must also pass a test before getting married, where they fight with sticks and scarification marks denote an opponent they have killed
